Education is an ornament that adorns the character of a human. Acquiring the education is not just aimed only to take care of yourself and getting a job, but how you bring a social change through it? And the purpose of learning is not just limited to obtaining information but how to become a specialist in a particular profession according to the ability.
In the developed countries of the world, the concept of reading and writing in own educational institution is not considered enough, but the psychological, political, social and moral training of children is of paramount importance for them.
If we compare our educational system with developed countries, we will find a lot of issues. No career counseling happens in our educational institutions, and that’s the reason, students face many problems.
Actually, the counseling or guidance doesn’t mean that the student’s career is selected by him or her; rather, it is intended to eliminate barriers to career paths. For the student to be informed about the chosen route to the destination, it is important to be aware of its hidden capabilities and weaknesses so that the student can avoid going the wrong way. And for that reason, guidance and counseling is very important but alas we lack career counseling in our education system.
It has been observed that for having no counseling or guidance, most of the candidates make their career decisions without thorough consideration. As a result, such decision-making creates problems and complications ahead, making students suffer from anxiety and depression. There should be a guideline for candidates in each and every institution, but unfortunately our institutions have utterly neglected it.
After middle and secondary class, an important phase begins for students to choose paths for different walks of life, and it continues up to the Bachelors, Masters, M. Phil and Ph.D. It's time for students to select specific fields, during which they need guidance and counseling. Due to lack of guidance the students choose such fields when enrolling in university, which are not according to their aptitude. Mostly, candidates opt to consult friends for a field, even though their friends don’t know about it. After such a step Candidates become very remorseful.
As a result of choosing the wrong path, the creative person gets knocked out due to lack of skills in wrongly-chosen field. Therefore, the responsibility of their failure not only lies in our education system but the parents are equally partners who fulfill their duty just by enrolling children in school and then remain aloof.
Most parents, unaware of their children’s aptitude and psychology, force their desires to become a doctor or engineer. Similarly, the teachers do not pay attention on creating a pleasant or friendly environment with the students so that they do not hesitate in consulting with teachers. This too affects adversely the students’ mind to have a scientific tendency.
According of experts today’s youth dreams big, but the practical struggle for dreaming is minimized. No doubt, youth dreams big, but question is ‘how hard does he work to fulfill that dream?’ If we talk about only graduated youth, they have many problems in professional life after getting a degree. In this situation, guidance is very important for youth. The question of Counseling exists in its place, but our youth needs to motivate themselves on the basis of skills and abilities. There is more emphasis on counseling in developed countries, but we are far behind in this regard.
According to unofficial results, Pakistan’s total population is estimated at 21 million, of which is 60 per cent youth. The tragedy is that the vast majority of the country’s population consists of young people, yet the young people are frustrated by the lack of counseling. Who is responsible for it?
The educational institutions are not only responsible for teaching theoretical lessons but also for teaching different skills. Although it is the government’s responsibility as per country 1973 constitution to provide every child of the country maximum opportunities for free and quality education, but it is strange that so many of our schools are closed or many of schools are changed in cattle den, which proves how poor and weak our education system is.
In this regard, the government and its education department should change their policy on education by comprehensive planning and adopting the best education system focusing on modernization of schools, colleges, market-oriented education system and above all setting up the Career Counseling Centers for students at education institutions.
